Yard Sign Design Tips
Short words, big letters, strong contrast: the sign-shop rules that make a yard sign readable from a moving car.
Read guide · 7 minLightweight, waterproof and up in ten seconds. Corrugated plastic yard signs are the workhorse of temporary outdoor messaging, and getting them right comes down to size, contrast and the right stake.
A good yard sign is mostly decisions you make before anything gets printed: how far away your reader will be, how many words they can take in, and how long the sign has to survive outdoors. We walk you through those choices, then quote the whole job (signs, stakes and shipping) as one delivered price.
Most yard signs are printed on 4mm corrugated plastic, often called coroplast. It's light enough to carry fifty at a time, shrugs off rain, and the hollow flutes inside the sheet let a wire stake slide straight in. For a sign that needs to stay up for a season or longer, we'll point you toward aluminum or aluminum composite instead.
Graduations, birthdays, welcome-home and congratulations signs.
Roofers, landscapers, painters and builders: "Another project by…" signs.
Vacation Bible school, enrollment, events, fundraisers and spirit signs.
Arrows for events, parking, open houses and weddings.
HOA reminders, neighborhood watch, slow-down and safety messages.
Sales, now-hiring, now-open and seasonal specials.
| Size | Orientation | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 12" × 18" | Portrait or landscape | Directional arrows, short messages, small lawns |
| 18" × 24" | Portrait or landscape | The all-purpose standard: events, contractors, celebrations |
| 24" × 36" | Usually landscape | Corners and busier roads where you need bigger letters |
| 4' × 8' | Landscape (posts or frame) | Large-format signs at entrances, lots and major intersections |

Stakes are usually priced as a separate line item, so we always list them in your quote and include them in the delivered total if you want them.
Yes. Many printers run multiple versions in one order. A small setup charge per design can apply, and we'll spell that out in the quote.
Some print partners will run a single sign. Per-sign cost drops as quantity goes up because setup is spread across more pieces, so it's worth asking for prices at two or three quantities.
